We are a husband and wife team who initially had a need for a bridge. We wanted to access a beautiful piece of our property separated by a stream. Because we share an admiration for covered bridges, we decided that ours should be covered. When the project was completed, we would hold our wedding ceremony on this bridge.
![]() Besides Kerry, Shawn had another best friend - Toby Hanna - in the form of a purebred Rottweiler. After the very sad time of her passing, our friend and a wonderful local woman sent Shawn a sympathy note along with the poem ‘Rainbow Bridge.’
That’s it!! That was going to be the name of our bridge. And so the Rainbow Bridge project began. After many tiresome hours and days and months along with the undying help from our friends and families, we held our timber frame bridge ‘raising.’ It was May 5, 2007.
We were to be married on July 28, 2007 and ironically enough, the wonderful woman who sent the poem would marry us. The Honorable Joyce Bulsiewicz officiated our ceremony….on Rainbow Bridge.
Shawn has owned an asphalt paving company for 23 years. Due to the rising costs of materials and traveling, we decided we would try a different business venture. We wanted to work right at home at something we were very passionate about. Both timber framing and covered bridges are forms of art which are slowly fading out in this ever-changing, fast paced world. Having a deep appreciation for both and admiring the beauty of our own, we thought this would be a terrific idea.
The two of us started out together with the gentleman who helped us design our bridge and the sawyer who sawed the lumber for our bridge. After a few weeks, more help from our friends and some serious tool shopping, we are fully equipped to build timber frame covered walking bridges. Our first attempt was this 52 foot single span. It was mostly trial and error but we had fun and it was very educational. It’s resting place will be just upstream from Rainbow Bridge.
